Construction Project Manager Jobs
People who have reached the highest level of experience in the
building industry may qualify for construction project manager positions. They may come from any number of
building backgrounds and have generally developed significant experience in a variety of
skills.
When they reach this point, they have surpassed the desire to work with their
management hands in a single trade. They have worked long to understand and become skilled in a wide variety
of building skills. If they have reached a point where they are ready to take on construction project management,
they will probably have the capability to build. They will be able to handle operations of any size,
including the trades people and payroll.
Acquired skills for construction project manager jobs
All builders who have achieved any significant success have high level skills in
numerous niche skills from concrete, to carpentry, to roofing. In fact, carpentry is where most eventually
successful builders began their path to success. Of all aspects of building, carpentry is the one that uniquely
must be understood to know what makes buildings sound in structure.
It's a given that anyone having achieved the ability to accept a construction
project management job will have learned various trades. They will also have thoroughly learned the
legal, financial and managerial aspects of running a successful construction project.
They must not only be able to build. They must know how to get a building finished
with every aspect considered to get it done in a profitable manner. These are not generally contractors. They are
people who can operate any building project from start to finish and understand all aspects of its
completion.
A construction project manager must be able to juggle the building, communication,
and worker management, keeping them in harmonious balance throughout. All are equal in importance and any one
factor that is ignored or not given proper attention will throw the project out of balance.
Construction project management jobs usually are employment positions rather than
contracted positions. People in this position are generally employed by large construction companies that can
finance this type of position. But for the right person, it is money well spent.
A competent project manager in this industry can mean the difference between a
multi million dollar building coming in soundly, on time and within budget, and being a financial disaster for the
customer or company.
All other managers and supervisors answer to the project
manager
For large projects there will generally be a project manager, a construction
superintendent, and multiple construction managers according to the size and complexity of the job. The PM will
coordinate the project from the beginning, making sure the other managers and workers' abilities and strengths are
all maximized.
All superintendents and job managers will ultimately answer to and communicate
with the project manager. The project manager will answer to the company executives for the success of the
project.
Construction can involve running every type of building project imaginable such as
residential neighborhoods, commercial buildings, underground structures, airports and more. The project manager is
generally responsible for hiring or overseeing the hiring of laborers, managers and others for the
project.
Very large projects are usually divided into manageable segments. Generally, site
clearance, road building, and other types of jobs are first. These clear the way for the rest of the building
project. In a nutshell, successful construction project manager jobs require that all these factors be achieved
with a desirable result both structurally and financially.
How all that turns out determines the success and future employment of the project
manager.
